How to join an OOTP online league as a general manager

Managers never enter FTP credentials. You join with a quick-start code, then use File → Online League to download the league and export your team.

Joining an OOTP online league is simpler than most new managers expect, because you never touch FTP settings. Your commissioner's connection details are baked into a quick-start code.

Game Settings is supposed to be greyed out

If you opened Game Settings looking for FTP options and found it disabled, nothing is wrong. That screen is commissioner-only. Managers do not enter a host, username, or password anywhere.

First time joining

  1. Get your quick-start code from your commissioner. They generate it in OOTP and can usually email it to you.
  2. On the OOTP start screen, open Online League Quick Start.
  3. Paste the code. OOTP downloads the league and sets your team up automatically.

That is the whole process.

Set FTP Mode to Passive — do this first

Before your first export, open File → Online League → Online League FTP Options and set FTP Mode → Passive mode.

Active mode requires the server to connect back to your computer, which home routers block. If you skip this, your first team export will likely fail with Error -201: Connect error.

The weekly loop

Once you are in, each sim cycle looks like this:

  1. File → Online League → Download latest league file — pull the new sim.
  2. Play your week — set lineups, make moves, work the trade market.
  3. Export your team via FTP — submit your moves before the deadline.

You do not need Quick Start again. It is a one-time setup step.

If your connection breaks

If downloads or exports suddenly stop working — usually because the commissioner rotated credentials — you have two options:

  • Preferred: ask your commissioner for the league's accounts file (accountsdata_gms.dat) and drop it into your local league's settings folder, replacing the old one. This repairs the connection without touching your save.
  • Last resort: re-run Quick Start with a fresh code.

Export your team before re-running Quick Start. It re-downloads the league and can overwrite your local copy, taking any unexported moves with it.

Missing the deadline

If you cannot export before the sim, tell your commissioner. Most will hold the sim briefly or run your team on AI settings for the week. What you should not do is export after the sim has run — the file will be from a stale league state and the commissioner cannot import it.

Frequently asked

Why is Game Settings greyed out for me in OOTP?
Game Settings is commissioner-only. General managers cannot open it, and do not need to — you never enter FTP host, username, or password. You join with a quick-start code from your commissioner.
How do I get a quick-start code?
Your commissioner generates it in OOTP under Add/Edit Human Managers by selecting you and clicking "Create quick-start email". They then send you the code.
How do I get the latest league file each week?
Use File → Online League → Download latest league file. You do not need to re-run Quick Start after the first time.
Do I need to re-run Quick Start every week?
No. Re-running Quick Start re-downloads the league and can overwrite your local copy. Only re-run it if your commissioner tells you the connection changed, and export your team first if you have unsaved moves.
